During the first lesson we talked about how you can look at someone and know how they feel. If we want to do that we are going to look at the mouth, eyes, eyebrows and other parts of the face. Today we are going to see if we can let someone else how we feel without saying any words. This is our emotions practice day.” Procedures: The students will work in groups of 2. Each student will have a set of 5 cards with different facial expressions. UDL: Initial instruction:
The teacher will explain that the students will be working in groups of 2. Each one of them will have a set of 5 cards. The students will have to take turns in expressing the emotions described on the cards. The other person will have 3 opportunities to guess the emotion that his colleague is trying to express. For each correct guess the student will earn a point.
The students can use mirrors in order to adjust their facial expressions.
Guided practice:
The teacher will explain that the student making the facial expressions will have to look at the card. Then the student should try to imitate the person in the picture. The teacher will remind the students that for positive emotions parts of the face will go up while for negative emotions parts the parts of the face tend to point down. The teacher will also remind the students who are performing that they keep the cards out of the other person’s sight.
The teacher will instruct the observers to pay close attention to the face of their partner.
Independent practice:
The students will form groups of 2. Each team should have a performer and an observer. The team members will take turns alternating roles. Once the 1st performer finished his set of cards he will become an observer, etc. On a piece of paper the observer will keep track of the points earned. Evaluation: The team who finishes first with the most points will get extra points. Performance Evaluation: The teams will receive point for using all of their face parts such as eyes, mouth, nose, eyebrows, etc. (teacher observation)
